Preparing Your Collection for a New Artwork: Advice from Amanda
Whether you already have one of Mere’s original pieces or you're simply growing your own special collection, I wanted to share a few thoughts our collectors have found helpful as you prepare for the arrival of a new work.
Bringing new art into your life is a special experience. It deserves a little intentionality, care, and maybe even a small celebration.
Here is how to prepare your collection for a new work:
1. Reflect on How the New Piece Connects
Every collection tells a story. Whether your pieces are connected by style, theme, or simply by the feeling they give you, it’s worth taking a moment to reflect:
-
What drew you to this new piece?
-
Does it reflect something you already love?
-
Is there a conversation that will happen between this piece and your existing works?
Especially with puzzlism, which carries layers of symbolism (wholeness, discovery, patience), it’s fascinating to see how each piece deepens the overall story you're telling, whether that story spans a cozy living room wall or a personal section devoted to your collection.
2. Plan the Environment Thoughtfully
Artworks thrive when they have the right space around them. A few things to consider:
-
Light: Soft, indirect lighting brings out the dimensionality without risking damage. Adjustable gallery lighting works beautifully, especially in dedicated spaces.
-
Spacing: Puzzle works reward close inspection. Even in a formal gallery wing, allowing breathing room invites viewers to step in and discover the intricacies.
-
Mood: Many collectors seek to create a "moment" around their artwork, a reading nook, a quiet bench nearby, or a conversation between pieces across a room.
Whether the artwork lives among hundreds of pieces or stands alone on a feature wall, the way you place it can turn your home into its own living, evolving gallery.
3. Handle Installation with Care
Depending on the size and framing style, you might want to:
-
Use professional installation, especially for larger or more intricate works.
-
Confirm your wall systems (especially in custom spaces) are suited for the piece’s weight and materials.
-
Save any special instructions you receive from the artist or gallery.
Taking a little extra care on day one ensures your new artwork stays in pristine condition for years or even generations to come.
4. Document and Protect Your Investment
Even if you collect purely for love (which is the best reason to collect!), it’s wise to document your new piece:
-
Keep a record of the title, date, dimensions, and artist.
-
File away your certificate of authenticity.
-
Photograph it once it’s installed, for your personal and insurance archives.
-
Update your fine art insurance if needed, especially if your collection is significant or housed across multiple properties.
Good records aren’t just about protection, they honor the art itself, and the story you’re curating for the future.
5. Make It Personal
Lastly, when a new piece enters your life, take a moment to mark the occasion.
Art isn't just about decoration, it's about transformation.
Whether it’s a quiet moment alone with the new piece, a gathering with friends and family, or a private unveiling in your collection wing, it's worth celebrating.
You've made space for beauty, thought, and feeling and that is no small thing.
With puzzle-piece art especially, where every piece was found, chosen, and placed with intention, you are welcoming a story of patience, discovery, and wonder into your life.
Wherever you are in your collecting journey, thank you for making space for art, it truly changes the world, one home (or collection) at a time.
Warmly,
Amanda
